The Department of
community Medicine at GMC, Jammu undertakes numerous activities. Some of the
activities being conducted are as under:

State Design team for RCH
Phase-II.
Internship
The internship in the Community Medicine is
mandatory for six months. The interns are posted in the Rural Health Blocks and
Urban Centers for 6 weeks each.
Co-ordination
The department is coordinating all the
activities of prevention and control of HIV infection/AIDS with other
departments of GMC, Jammu and on behalf of J&K State AIDS Prevention and Control
Society. The department coordinates the activities under Border Area Development
Programme (BADP), National Institute of Health and Family Welfare also nominated
the department for regional coordination for J&K Stats AIDS surveillance for the
year 2002, 2003 & 2004.
Medical Education Unit.
The department is nodal point for carrying out
the activities of Medical Education in GMC, Jammu in which integrated teaching
of Post-graduate students/teaching in Bio-statistics for Post-graduate students
and organizing inter-departmental clinical meetings are carried out.
Trainings.
The department is involved in many training
programmes which include training on HIV infection/AIDS for all categories of
staff including Medical Officers, Mid-level managers and functionaries of Social
Welfare Department, training and reaching of Health Inspectors in coordination
with State Medical Faculty and in-service training for Medical Officers,
Para-medial Professionals on Primary Health Care/National Health Programme.
Surveys.
The department has involved in
conducting RCH Surveys. The survey has been completed in R.S.Pura and
Kot-Bhalwal and is near completion in Dansal.
The Department in collaboration with the
Directorate of Health Services, Jammu and under the aegis of Ministry of Health
& Family Welfare, Govt. of India conducted a survey of cataract blindness under
National Programme for Control of Blindness in May-June, 2004. A survey report
to this effect has been released by the Directorate General of Health Service,
New Delhi on 22.07.2004.
Family Health Awareness Campaigns and
Social Mobilization.
The department organizes these campaigns in Medical College Blocks and Urban
slums of Jammu city and for social mobilization, rallies, symposia and seminars
etc. are conducted.
Camping Organizing.
A number of General health checkup camps, free
eye camps, cancer detection camps etc. are organized in the field practice
areas. IPPI days are observed and mass immunization is given by mopping up
operations. Hepatitis-B immunization camps are also organized in rural areas by
donation. Awareness camps and training of Para-medical, Social Welfare
functionaries and Rabher-e-Sahet teachers are being trained in screening school
going children cases particularly refraction for refraction errors.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Evaluation of IPPI coverage is done in Jammu
district with the assistance of UNICEF. The National Health Programme viz.
National Anti-malaria Programme etc. are monitored and evaluated in the
department through performance SPM-I & II designed by the department. The
department of serving sample survey assessment unit for National Programme of
elimination of Leprosy. A Sentinel Surveillance Unit under National Programme of
Control of Blindness has been established in the department through Ministry of
Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India in coordination with the department of
Ophthalmology.
Post-graduation
The department has already conducted research
work on Hypertension, ARI, Diarrheal Disease, Family Welfare and Tuberculosis,
Research is in progress on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Contraceptives.
Membership of Nation consortium of
Training Institution.
The department has been short listed as one of
the members of the consortium amongst 25 departments of reputed Medical College
in India.
State Design team for RCH
Phase-II.
The faculty of the department has been included in the State Design team for
implementation of RCH Phase-II. They are members of two working groups –
Maternal & Child Health and Adolesecents & Urban Health. The working groups
shall prepare specific proposals, components-wise, following which the state
plan for implementation of RCH Phase-II shall be finalized.
